This weekend I experienced two things that I loved so much, I decided to add them to my list of favorite things. I also enjoyed them so much that I thought they would make a worthy subject for a blog post.
My first new favorite thing of the weekend is cask beers: beers that are aged (in this case) in bourbon casks. I had two different cask beers from two different restaurants in Des Moines. The first was a Goose Island beer, Bourbon County Stout, served at Zombie Burger in the East Village. Although I was intrigued by the concept and really enjoyed it, with an alcohol content of 14.5% it proved a little strong for me. However, it piqued my interest and opened my mind to the concept for my next encounter with a cask beer the very next night.
The second cask beer that I had (and am positively in love with) was from Court Avenue Brewing Company.
It was their reserve beer, which changes from time to time depending on
demand, etc. With a much lower alcohol content, it had all of the
things that I love about Bourbon without the overwhelming effects of hard liquor: smooth, buttery, and tres yum ;) 
My second new favorite thing of the weekend is Bare Escentuals Flawless Definition Mascara. My biggest pet peeve about mascara is the apparent belief of makeup companies that it isn't working unless your eye lashes are coated in a thick, clumpy, globby mess of the stuff. Yuck. So when the sales rep told me that her favorite quality of this mascara was the absence of clumping, I was interested. Now that I've had a chance to try it out, I have to hand it to her (and Bare Escentuals). It does exactly what she said it would: not clump. Yay! As an added bonus, it is available in dark brown; more and more this is a difficult shade to find. So I was very pleased with my purchase.
